  • Presence and absence, exhibiting and performing, subject and object: stagings by Ben J. Riepe deal with work on the fringes of the fleeting. This aesthetic questioning forms the framework for numerous stage pieces, performances as well as for video and film works that have been shown nationally and internationally. Answering to the idiom of this year’s Malta Festival Poznań, Riepe deploys an ephemeral space of perception for the senses with his Choreographic dinner.

Over the course of two festival evenings, the Düsseldorf-based choreographer and his seven piece ensemble of dancers serve dinner to the audience. Together, they want to discuss red-hot topics, artistic questions and experiences that are taken in by the senses. The common table becomes a stage opening new fields of action for the company as a displacement between art and congregation, aesthetics and participation, space and community. The staging affects guests directly, leading them into a cosmos of smells, food, sounds, movement and all sorts of sensual and aesthetic spaces of experience. Within this, there lies not only a focus on current imminent topics, but also and at the same time on central questions concerning the ephemeral principle of a choreography of spaces as well as on hosting culture. In this collective project, the company creates a space for artistic participation, offering every guest a very direct experience.

At the heart of the spectacle Choreographic dinner by Ben J. Riepe is supper for specatotors, prepared by TOP CHEF Tomasz Purol.

  • BEN J. RIEPE studied dance and choreography at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. After his graduation he worked as a dancer, for Pina Bausch and for V.A. Wölfl/NEUER TANZ. Next to the continuous work with his ensemble, which he founded in 2004, he also works a guest-choreograph and –teacher. He choreographed a dance production with Malaysian artists in Kuala Lumpur for the Goethe-Institute in 2007. In May 2008 he attended a congress for the creative exchange among choreographers in Beijing in the context of Chin-A-Moves.

In 2009 Ben J. Riepe was selected for the “Spitzenförderung”, a three-year-funding-project by the government of North-Rhine-Westphalia, as one of four choreographers. He created a production for the Folkwang Tanzstudio as a guest choreographer in the first half of 2009. In November 2009 he received the “Förderpreis des Landes NRW für junge Künstler und Künstlerinnen”, a price that honours young artists and their work in NRW. Also in 2009 he attended an exchange program for choreographers by the World Dance Alliance in New Delhi.
Ben J. Riepe started developing his own ensemble in 2004. The company, legally a registered non-profit association, now works continuously in its own production space in Düsseldorf. As a teacher he continues to give workshops in the fields of coaching for choreographers, performance-skills and improvisation, for both choreographers and performance artists.
